B.R.A.Z.I.L > More of you please//Sp fotoshoot

Its been two months. And, I do not want to leave. Brazil has found such a special place in my heart. Its crazy. Words can't describe. Is it the family culture, is it their hugs, is it the açai, is it Portuguese?

After travelling 40 countries, I think that I'm able to give some analysis on my favourite country outside Australia. Right? And the winner is .. Brazil! It’s like Aussie culture on steroids. They are simply more passionate, more multicultural, more free, more naturally musical, more corrupt, more loud, and more huggable.

At the heart of Brazilian culture is generosity. I’ve never had so many beautiful people around me offer me their time and resource and heart in an effort to help a friend out. Because of travel issues, I came to Brazil without a guitar. Stressed out, I tweeted to my twitter friend Tiago Orrais for help. I have never met the guy face to face, but I'm a massive fan of his craft. Him and his brother have a massive international following with their beautiful gospel folk. Tiago told me that I could borrow his guitar, and I was blown away. He told me "We're in this mission together bro". Those words meant so much, and told me so much about Brazilian ethos and mentality.

Brazilians also carry a spirit of being ‘chilled’. My surrogate uncle in Rio De Janeiro would also constantly  tell me in moments of near crisis, ‘relax bro’. I love that. I love that robust desire to remain calm amidst a world of variables.

I’ve never made so many quality and lifelong friends in such a concentrated period of time. I don’t know what it is. That’s the thing!

Why has this country won my heart? And why do I connect with its characters, rhythms, flaws and vibes in such a way? I think its because Brazilian culture is one of eclecticism. The society is made up of import people groups and influences from Portugal, Africa, Japan, Germany and Poland, just to name a few. I've always been drawn towards cultures and peoples that truly demonstrate acceptance; communities that celebrate diversity. As a mixed Australian/Malaysian, trying to find a home has always been a task. In Brazil I definitely have tasted a sense of 'home'.

As many Brazilian amigos have said to me, “Billy, you are a Brazilian. This is your home”. Thank you for this reminder of my 'true' identity.

Please do yourself a favour and watch my friend Gabriel Iglesias unleash the melodious goods.

So there you have it guys. Love this place/people/eats/music/beaches/youth groups/ministry friends/surf friends/cities..

All in all, I’ve played dozens of shows, ate dozens of açai, surfed super fun waves, experienced close a thousand brazileiro selfies, and now I’m already planning a return trip in October.

Talking about new friends, I want to mention Rodolfo Sanches Carvalho. He is a creative genius. He’s special: a typical young art director who oozes with so much flair and electric vision. I couldn’t believe he offered a shoot! Laughing all the way to the farm with my cowboy hat, I met the photo crew. And then, we had some fun. Please check out his portfolio. Its actually quite earth shattering stuff. This guy has a glowing future ahead. Such a humble cat also.

Canada dreaming..

Canada! I've loved you, thank you for your culture and slopes that have helped me to revive, rejuvenate, and get inspired to write new music and make films for a fresh new year. Transitioning into a new life is always heavy on the heart, and venturing from Oz to North America called for a week of fun and reflection. God spoke to me here, and I'm grateful. The feeling of stepping off a plane with your bags, no one to pick you up, no hotel booked, a new country, yeah, its so good.

It was my first time ever here in Canada, and BC to be more exact, and I've fallen in l o v e. It must be the commonwealth connection. Every stranger I met was so pleasant and ready for an insightful conversation. I was able to meet up with some of my aussie brethren and snowboard the much glorified, Whistler. Every Canadian seems to be proud of their local music. Neil Young, The Arcade Fire, Celine Dion, JB, Alexis on Fire, Sum41, oh, and Nickelback (?). Forgive me!

Blackcomb Mountain was insane. After taking a few lifts up the mount, we then boarded off a trail to then hike over a hill. We then landed here: one of the most breathtaking views I've ever seen. So special to share it with a very lovely group of friends from AUS and CAN. It was then one of those awkward moments that followed: it's your 4th snowboarding day ever and then you're peer pressured to taking on a double black run in very icy conditions. Sore-ness incorporated.. Any who, being spontaneous with awesome people and taking on new   #adventures   is a massive part of what life is about, I reckon.

It was awesome incredible to meet up with a man of God that I hadn't seen in 8 years, Steve Mirkovich. He was one of my professors at bible college (http://www.lightbearers.org/arise/). I've got fond memories of this guy leading me through scripture and giving wise counsel on missional living. He truly left a mark on my life. He's a husband, father of two boys, church planter and leader, snowboarder, and only 32. Love him. In Christ we meet and connect with brothers and sisters from around the globe. Such a blessing to be part of this epic tribe of God.

Snapping some frames with another aussie brother, Keegan. I just found myself reconnecting with old brothers, everyday. SO crazy. Blessed to crash with him for a night and explore Whistler with a car. Random and beautiful. Yay.

Billy's CANADA Travel essentials:

1. Snowboard gear: Yeah I didn't bring or organize my own and paid big money to hire:(

2. Bible and Notebook: Don't just use your phone, use the real deal. It's the best thing to be in the word and writing down your contemplative thoughts wherever you are; on plane, in bus, inside hotel.

3. Gopro: so light and easy to carry and capture wide and ambient moments. Spend that $500 and make the memories and moments come alive!

4. Trench Coat: so warm and trendy. Good in the cold, good in the city, good make-shift blanket when sleeping at the airport.

To the eastern states I endeavor,

xo

Billy Otto latest story - The Otto's: live in Newcastle

I LOVE FAMILY!

I come from a family called the Otto's - 4 siblings from Australia.

My family is dearest thing I hold to my heart. My sibs are my best mates. I couldn't journey without them. I've been so blessed to grow up in a big family where creativity is celebrated and nurtured.

Old school family moments..

Old school family moments..

My two sisters, brother and myself are half Malaysian and we've been playing music together since we came out of the womb (sounds like a heavy exaggeration, yet the beautiful Sarah was singing harmonies from the age of 3, and now she is 25!)

Walking the red carpet with these lovelys at Music Oz 4 years ago. Time flys. That night @melissaottomusic battled   #theottobrothers   and conquered in the gospel category. Lucky our tribal family still received the benefits.. I always knew I got the black gene.

As life has evolved, so have our diverse individual solo projects and marriage ventures. All 3 siblings of mine have now tied the not, with Melissa's baby on the way. Hence it's been an ever complex operation to squeeze any HQ creative time for the crew. Most of us have released solo EP's and ALBUMS, but we collectively knew it was time to combine and collaborate our own individual songs by involving each other in a raw environment of folk/acoustic/gospel colours. We dream-stormed the idea of making an 8 track live album CD/DVD recorded in our home town, Newcastle. The Otto kids (minus Jonno - unfortunately he  could not be with us because he's living it up in San Diego) came together this year in April to start making our dream a reality.

We recorded all of our different songs live in the studio and want to make it available as separate audio tracks and video.

The songs are as follows:

ARROWS (Billy)

OVER AND OVER (Sarah)

RUN RUN (Melissa)

FLOATING NOW (Billy)

HERE HE COMES (Melissa)

COME BABY (Melissa)

LEGACY OF LOVE (Sarah)

MILLER AND THE MIDNIGHT CRY (Billy)

The recording process was intense. We honestly smashed out 8 songs in a single day. Can you believe it? The day: beginning at 8:30, wrapping up at 2am. We surprisingly finished well.

Working with Luke O'dea (producer) and Reuben Ennor (filmmaker) was insane. Their dynamic creative flair and zeal brought the project to new heights.

Our filmmaker Reuben Ennor in the distance, doing his magic.

Luke and myself however got a little freaked out. At 2am we were locking up the studio. As we walked outside onto the dodgy streets of Tighes Hill, some big fella's under the influence started to call out to us from a distance. Luke then told me to walk faster with him. As soon as we got around the corner, we began to sprint towards our cars which were loaded up 5k each minimum with music gear. We waited in our cars with lights off, then darted off 5 minutes later, still with a scare and adrenaline rush!

As many of you may know, we got some help with $ from Kickstarter. Thanks to all of you friendly peeps out there that were part of our crowd-funding efforts. We hit our financial goal which alleviated a portion of the production costs.

THANK YOU MELBOURNE!

I think that I want to buy more flower shirts from op shops. So cheap, so Miami cruise vibe.. shots from the Cocking House, Heathmont.

3 years ago i spoke for an asian youth camp. Some of the leaders found out that i was in their hood in Melbourne. So, an amazing house show/asian party broke out. So stoked to have been surrounded by so many good friends that i've met over the last 7 years. Great night of reconnection, sharing my new songs and sharing the journey. Love to all! Che che.
